New species of Graphidaceae from the Neotropics and Southeast Asia

Abstract: Descriptions and illustrations are provided for 20 new species in the family Graphidaceae (lichenized fungi) originating from El Salvador, the Guianas, Venezuela, Colombia, and Malaysia: Acanthothecis adjuncta Welz & Sipman, differing from all other Acanthothecis species by the rounded ascocarps with covered discs; Astrochapsa albella Sipman, differing from A. meridensis in the white apothecium rim, the corticolous growth habit, the more or less clear hymenium, and the protocetraric acid chemistry; A. columnar… Show more

“…The lirellae with the labia becoming soon fully exposed, the finely inspersed hymenium, and the comparatively narrow ascospores thus provide a unique character combination for A. exuens . Somewhat similar is the recently described Graphis murali-elegans Sipman from Colombian paramo, but that species has much broader, conspicuously thick-walled ascospores and produces norstictic acid (Sipman 2014).…”

“…In her broad revision of genus concepts in Graphidaceae, Staiger (2002) added six more species to the genus, bringing the total to 22; however, since then the number of species assigned to Acanthothecis has more than doubled to 50, including several combinations and 25 further species described as new to science (Makhija & Adawadkar 2003, 2007Archer 2005Archer , 2007Archer & Elix 2007, 2008Dal-Forno & Eliasaro 2009;Kalb et al 2009;Kantvilas 2010;Sharma et al 2010;Tripp et al 2010;Cáceres & Lücking 2013;van den Boom & Sipman 2013;Lendemer & Harris 2014;Sipman 2014;Weerakoon et al 2014;Gupta & Sinha 2015;Muscavitch & Lendemer 2016;Joshi et al 2017;Seavey et al 2017;Herrera-Campos et al 2019). Eight previously recognized species were also placed in synonymy (Staiger 2002;Tripp et al 2010;Muscavitch & Lendemer 2016).…”
