Pasini and Garassino (2017a) revised the fossil record referred to Ranina Lamarck, 1801 by Karasawa et al. (2014). As result only four species were considered as possible valid species within Ranina: R. palmea E. Sismonda, 1846, R. pellattieroi De Angeli and Beschin, 2011, R. propinqua Ristori, 1891, and R. ranina (Linnaeus, 1758). These species are herein revised and discussed, based on updated observations and critical review of the fossil materials and on a re-definition of the main diagnostic proxy characters sensu Schweitzer (2003) of the type species R. ranina (Linnaeus, 1758). This review allows us to establish that R. ranina from the middle Pleistocene of Ryukyu Islands (Japan) and R. palmea from the middle Miocene of Italy have consistent proxy characters with the extant Ranina to be considered as valid species within the genus. Moreover, Tethyranina n. gen., with T. propinqua (Ristori, 1891) n. comb., is herein proposed to accommodate this questionable fossil species previously assigned to Ranina. Finally R. pellattieroi De Angeli and Beschin, 2011, lacking the typical characters of Ranina, is considered as a doubtful species within Ranininae.

Taxonomy, length-weight relationship, food and feeding habits of flower moon crab Matuta planipes Fabricius, 1798 from coastal waters of Gopalpur, Odisha, India ABSTRACTThe relationship between carapace length (CL), carapace width (CW) and total weight (TW) in the flower moon crab Matuta planipes Fabricius, 1798 was studied and found to be CL = 0.144+1.319 CW and CL = 0.356+1.273 CL for males and females respectively. In case of the carapace width and total weight, the relationships were: TW = 0.272 CW 3.011 and TW = 0.474 CW 2.555 for males and females respectively. The relationships of carapace length and total weight were: TW = 0.128 CL 2.917 for males and TW = 0.184 CL 2.650 for females. A linear pattern was found between the relationship of CL and CW for M. planipes, whereas a curvilinear pattern was found between the relationship of CL/CW and TW in the present study. It was also observed that M. planipes is an opportunistic omnivore, seaweed being the most dominant food item followed by crustaceans, seagrass, amphipods and miscellaneous matter.

Abstract. The collection of deep-sea pebble crabs (Leucosioidea) during the BIOPAPUA Expedition, comprising 8 species, including a species new to science, is significant because although the previously described species had not been recorded from the Bismarck and western Solomon Seas, they occurred in at least one nearby location (New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Solomon Is). Praebebalia fungifera sp. nov. is described and illustrated. It differs from its closest congener, P. septemspinosa Sakai, 1983, in bearing fungiform granules dorsally on carapace, shorter chelipeds, the relatively stout male first gonopod with a preapical row of setae and the beak-like tip, as compared to the rounded granules dorsally on the carapace, greatly elongate chelipeds and the slim, elongate, distally curved gonopod of P. septemspinosa, preapically set with very long setae and a hook-like tip.
