“…In addition, the levels of 9 campesterol and stigmasterol were similar (around 25%), and a new phytosterol, fucosterol, was accumulated in the culture medium, although its level of accumulation was the lowest (around 11%). These results agreed with those found by Almagro et al [36] who observed that the levels of campesterol were maximal in flax SCC treated with CDs whereas the proportion of stigmaterol was very low.…”

“…Almagro et al [36] also observed that the presence of CDs increased phytosterol production in tomato, orange carrot and flax SCC, reaching levels of 50 µg g DW -1 , 6.500 µg g DW -1 and 1.325 µg g DW -1 , respectively in the best conditions. Although the levels of phytosterols in green carrot SCC were lower than in orange carrot SCC, the main advantage of using green carrot SCC is that treatment with CDs not only increases extracellular phytosterol production but also the production of phenolic compounds like isoeugenol, eugenol and vanillin (as described below), making this system highly attractive for obtaining of several bioactive compounds.…”

“…In agreement with our results, some studies have showed that CDs induced both the production as well as extracellular accumulation of bioactive compounds like taraxasterol, resveratrol, and phytosterol in SCC. In fact, Briceño et al, Sabater‐Jara and Pedreño, and Almagro et al also observed that the addition of CDs to tomato, carrot and flax SCC enhanced the levels of phytosterols in the spent medium. Moreover, our results also agreed with those found by Bonfill et al who showed that the levels of phytosterols decreased when MeJA was added to Centella asiatica SCC.…”

“…Phytosterols and tocopherols were extracted from both spent media and cells as described by Sabater‐Jara and Pedreño and Almagro et al, respectively. The extracts were filtered through 0.22 µm filters before injecting into a gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (GC/MS) system.…”
