New Trends in Disinfection By-Products Formation upon Water Treatment

Abstract: This review paper deals with the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Water basin remains a wonderful chemical reactor that allows the occurrence of intricate secondary disinfection chemical reactions, forming several hundreds of DBPs at the same time with microorganisms killing. The kinetics of DBPs formation is tightly dependent on water physicochemical characteristics such as temperature, hydrophobic/hydrophilic fractions in natural organic matter (NOM), pH, and pretreatment. Reducing DBPs levels i… Show more

“…As a result, AOPs are usable before membranes methods to reduce fouling or later to eliminate micro-contaminants that may go through. Drawbacks of AOP methods comprise the generation of oxidation by-products [29] that, in defined situations, may gather in water and be more poisonous than the original compound. For instance, O 3 /H 2 O 2 and UV/H 2 O 2 may conduct to either the generation or the decomposition of bromate [30], polyfluorinated chemicals [31] [37].…”

“…Great modifications are producing in the water treatment technology, pushed by more and more rigorous water quality standards, a constant augmentation in the number of regulated drinking water pollutants (from ~ 5 in 1940 to ~ 100 in 1999), and recently developed regulations influencing disinfection and DBPs (Weiner, 2012;Roberson, 2008;Boucherit et al, 2015). Cities always look for improving their water treatment and give high-quality water by more economical techniques.…”

“…In this situation, iron should exclusively substitute Al and Cu as a green chemical in coagulation process [28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35]. Several studies have proven the Fe efficiency in treating different types of water and wastewater.…”
