New Water-Soluble Organic Capsules Are Effective in Controlling Excited-State Processes of Guest Molecules

Abstract: Synthesis, inclusion properties, and ability to control excited-state properties of two water-soluble hosts are presented. These hosts surround the guest molecule(s) by forming a capsular assembly. By constraining the guest and by providing very little free space, the host is able to alter the excited-state behavior of guest molecules. The excited-state chemistry and physics of guest molecules are distinctly different from those in organic solvents.

“…25−27 In this study, a cavitand similar in size and properties to OA with eight ammonium groups (octaamine, OAm), recently reported by Ramamurthy group, 28 is used as the host for neutral organic molecules. Strong Coulombic attraction between the ammonium groups and anionic surface of the clay anchor OAm to clay nanosheets.…”

“…OAm was synthesized according to the literature procedure. 12 with an aqueous dispersion of saponite clay at the maximum adsorption amount with an average intercapsule distance of 2.4 nm, as determined in our previous study 15 . This high density adsorption aims to suppress the formation of a partially sandwiched structure (Figure 1c) resulting from the presence of free anionic charges on free clay.…”

“…Our group recently reported that a cationically charged organic capsule, composed of two cavitand molecules with eight ammonium groups (octa amine 12 (OAM, Figure 1)) could be anchored on an anionically charged saponite clay nanosheet. Guest@OAm 2 16+ represents a protonated capsular assembly having 16 positive charges enclosing aromatic guest molecule.…”

“…4). [103][104][105][106] The octa acid (OA) derivative 7 is the rst example of water soluble deep cavitands based on a resorcin [4]arene scaffold, able to provide supramolecular dimeric capsules in presence of several guests. 107 Octa acid cavitands 7-10 differ from similar opened containers (such as micelles, open cavitands, cyclodextrins, cucurbiturils and Pd nanocages) because they are closed containers.…”
