News & Notes: Virulence of Vibrio alginolyticus Isolated from Diseased Tiger Prawn, Penaeus monodon

Abstract: Outbreaks of mass mortality among cultured tiger prawns (Penaeus monodon) with white spotted syndrome (WSS) in the carapace occurred in the summer of 1994 in I-Lan, Taiwan. A swarming strain Val was isolated from hemolymph of the moribund prawns with tryptic soy agar (TSA, supplemented with 1% NaCl, Oxoid) and/or thiosulfate citrate bile salt sucrose (TCBS, Difco) agar. This strain was characterized and identified to be Vibrio alginolyticus. The strain was susceptible to antibiotics such as chloramphenicol, ci… Show more

“…V. anguillarum, V. salmonicida, and V. vulnificus are among the main bacterial pathogens of several fish species (14), and V. harveyi is a major pathogen of shrimp, e.g., Litopenaeus vannamei and Penaeus monodon (15,225,227). Mortality caused by vibrios in reared fish and shellfish is very common during early larval stages and can occur suddenly, leading sometimes to death of the entire population (42,96,157,184,185,187,217,230,283,287,295). Pathogenicity of V. harveyi is associated with the presence of a bacteriophage (15,291).…”

“…Several clinical infections caused by V. alginolyticus were reported (Levine and Griffin 1993;Reina Prieto and Heravs Palazon 1993;GahrnHansen and Hornstrup 1994;Gomez et al 2003), as well as tremendous damage caused in fish, shellfish and crustaceans (Anderson et al 1988;Lightner 1988;Lee et al 1996;Vandenberghe et al 1999;Hörmansdorfer et al 2000;Huang and He 2002;George et al 2005;Gó mezLeó n et al 2005;Hu et al 2005;Jayaprakash et al 2006).…”
