A simple experiment has been conducted to study Newton's law of cooling and heating by observing the nature of the increasing and decreasing water temperature by utilizing a data logger, a thermocouple, a pan, a hot plate, and water. The uncovered pan contained water which was subsequently heated on a hot plate. The water was heated at ambient temperature and normal atmospheric pressure to see that the temperature rose exponentially. Conversely, the temperature of hot water decreased exponentially when the heat source was switched off. The model for increasing and decreasing water temperature is following the Newton's law of cooling and heating. It was proven that the experimental data highly fit theoretical models. The temperature increment constant (ka) and the temperature decrement constant (kd) determined the rate of temperature changes. Low values of ka and kd led to the slow change in the temperature, either the increase or the decrease in the water temperature and vice versa. The ka > kd was observed for all given conditions so that the increasing rate in the water temperature was faster than its decrease. The result of this study can be applied as an example of contextual learning of physics for university students.

The purposes of this research were to develop and find the quality of the experimental set for studying the changing state of matter with smart learning media displayed through the IoT system. The data collection tools used in this research were 1) the accuracy percentage, 2) a suitability assessment form 3) a learning achievement test in “changing state of matter” and 4) satisfaction questionnaires. The statistics for analyzing the collected data were mean (), percentage, standard deviation (S.D.), and t-test dependent. The result showed that the Digital Thermo Sensor had 98.5% accuracy in 30 -100 compared with the standard thermometer. The experimental set was used to determine the melting points of pure substances, Naphthalene, Biphenyl, and water’s boiling point. The result found that the accuracy of melting point of Naphthalene and Biphenyl and the boiling point of water was 99.87, 99.75, and 99.99, respectively. The quality of the experimental set was also studied. Three experts evaluated the developed experiment set at a very good level. The experimental set successfully developed students’ understanding of a change of state concept. About 80% of students scored above the prescribed criterion of 70% of the total score. After learning, the scores of the students were higher than those before learning at a confidence level of 0.01. 30 grade-10 students evaluated the satisfaction evaluation at an excellent level. Therefore, the experimental set developed suitable for student learning in the topic of change of state effectively.

Heat is lost by the system due to temperature difference between the hot object and surroundings. Two models which explain cooling are conduction-convection method and radiation method. During an automobile engine operation, both engine and engine oil get heated up. To overcome the problem of excessive heat generated, coolant is used to cool down the system. In present study, cooling rate of engine oil kept at high temperature was studied in the absence and presence of coolant. In the absence of coolant, engine oil follows the natural law of cooling stated by Newton and follows the exponential decay in temperature. Cooling rate constant was estimated through fitting first order and second order exponential decay with experimental data and found to be 3.35 × 10 − 4 s − 1 and 2.39 × 10 − 4 s − 1 (in first 50 min) respectively. Cooling rate in the presence of coolant was studied which shows rapid decrease in temperature for first few minutes which may be attributed to high heat capacity of coolant which surrounds the hot engine oil. After 50 min of cooling, temperature of both fluids found to decrease exponentially. Thus, the use of coolant was found to absorb the heat content from the engine oil rapidly in comparison to natural environment. Cooling rate constant were estimated through fitting experimental data and found to be 2.44 × 10 − 4 s − 1 and 2.43 × 10 − 4 s − 1 for engine oil and coolant respectively. The percentage change in temperature of oil in first two minutes in the presence of coolant was about 70% which is much higher in comparison to cooling without the use of coolant which was about 16% only. For data acquisition of temperature of engine oil and coolant, MAX6675 module with K-type thermocouple is used which were interfaced with the Arduino board.
