Next‐generation Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) incorporated nanofibre wound dressings

Abstract: The skin is the most exposed organ and, therefore, vulnerable to injury and wounds (Nguyen & Soulika, 2019). Wound healing is a complex tissue repair process, and failing to manage it could result in the formation of scars (Landén et al., 2016; Takeo et al., 2015). Tissue repair involves the partial tissue regeneration involving restitution of tissue components during the wound healing process (Atkin et al., 2019; Gonzalez et al.., 2016). Wound healing is a dynamic process consisting of four phases: inflammati… Show more

“…PVA nanofibers loaded with cinnamaldehyde phytoconstituent were fabricated to tackle the irritant effect associated with cinnamaldehyde and also to boost its therapeutic efficacy for eradicating Candida biofilm by solving the problem of high volatility and low aqueous solubility . In a recent development, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) were also fabricated as nanofibers using poly(ethylene oxide) for the purpose of wound healing …”

“…Besides the fact that the selected nisin concentrations were comparable to the minimum inhibitory concentration of nisin for S. aureus (10 μg/mL), rapid compound diffusion throughout the agar plate could explain the lack of antibacterial activity. In another work [ 107 ], the authors estimated the antibacterial activity of polyethylene oxide (PEO) material that contained one of the following two AMPs: GH12-COOH-M2 (type 1 AMP) and AMP2 (type 2 AMP). For this purpose, different concentrations (3.5, 7, 10.5, 14, and 17,5% w / v ) of tested AMPs were added to PEO materials.…”

“…An effective drug delivery strategy must encompass the above features but go beyond them and be able to interact with complex cellular functions in new ways [ 93 , 109 ]. Moreover, it needs to be biodegradable, biocompatible, and comfortable for patients with minimal adverse effects both during and after drug administration [ 95 , 110 ].…”

“…The best wound dressings should serve multiple purposes, including preventing acute or chronic infection, preserving a balanced environment for moisture and gas exchange, absorbing extrudates and blood from wounds, and stimulating cell migration and proliferation, which will aid in wound healing [ 109 , 110 , 112 , 114 , 122 , 123 , 124 , 125 ]. All these characteristics can simultaneously be present in nanofibre wound dressings.…”
