Nexus between Natural Resources and Environmental Degradation: Analysing the Role of Income Inequality and Renewable Energy

Abstract: Globally, as the environment deteriorates, use of renewable energy is increasing. The discrepancy between inequalities, sustainable sources, and natural resources, on the other hand, is enormous. As a consequence, the current research simulated the link between income inequality, renewable energy, and carbon emissions from 1990 to 2018. The long run and short run interaction were estimated using an autoregressive distribution lag (ARDL) model. According to the study’s findings, improvements in sustainable powe… Show more

“…The essence of the green economy lies in the utilization of renewable energy sources in contrast to depletable and mineral resources for energy production. Scholarly research (Ali et al, 2021;Wang et al, 2021;Adekoya et al, 2022) underscores that the adoption of renewable energy resources serves as a pivotal indicator in mitigating natural environmental degradation. Notably, empirical evidence suggests that progress and innovation in renewable energy resources offer an environmentally friendly alternative characterized by reduced costs and enhanced sustainability (Dincer and Dost, 1996;Dincer and Rosen, 1998).…”

“…Such resources are deemed to have the potential to alleviate the adverse ecological consequences associated with traditional energy sources, such as fossil fuels. The studies by Ali et al (2021), Wang et al (2021), andAdekoya et al (2022) collectively emphasize the significant role of renewable energy in curbing environmental degradation, thereby reflecting a growing recognition of its importance in shaping future policy frameworks.…”

“…In recent years, there has been a significant surge in CO 2 emissions, posing a grave and imminent threat to the human race. Despite global attempts to regulate carbon emissions by applying new policies and regulations, CO₂ emissions continue to rise daily and persist unabated (Wang et al, 2021). Substantial economic and industrial growth have enhanced the mining and demand for natural reserves in advanced and fast-growing economies.…”

“…Environmental regulations reduce the adverse effect on the environment through fossil-coal energy usage and investment from foreign whereas green energy usage increases the favorable association with environment quality. Wang et al (2021) examined the relationship between natural resources and environmental degradation in Pakistan between 1990 and 2018. The analysis of inequality, sustainable resources, green energy, natural resources, and CO₂ emissions was based on an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL).…”

“…Despite the crucial role of governance in socio‐economic development, there is a blind spot in the scholarly literature regarding its mediating role in the natural resource endowment–renewable energy development nexus. Researchers have examined the nexus between natural resources and environmental degradation (Shittu et al, 2021; Wang et al, 2021), the nexus between CO 2 emissions and resource rent (Bekun et al, 2019), the relationship between natural resources and ecological footprints (Nathaniel et al, 2021), the association between renewable energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions (Bhattacharya et al, 2017; Salim & Rafiq, 2012), the influence of renewable energy and natural resources on environmental quality (Li et al, 2022; Zafar et al, 2021), and the long‐run and causal effect of financial development and renewable energy consumption on environmental sustainability (Kirikkaleli & Adebayo, 2021). However, those studies did not investigate the mediating role of governance in the relationship between natural resource endowment and renewable energy development.…”
