Ni-coated graphite felt modified with Ag nanoparticles: A new electrode material for electro-reductive dechlorination

Abstract: Reductive removal of the organochlorine herbicide alachlor on Ni-coated graphite felt modified with Ag nanoparticles (Ag/Ni@GF) was studied. Ag/Ni@GF was prepared by spontaneous deposition of silver onto Ni-coated graphite felt (Ni@GF), which was previously obtained by electrodeposition of Ni onto graphite felt (GF). Interestingly, Ag/Ni@GF exhibited a high specific surface area of 26 m 2 g -1 determined by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller

“…The electrodechlorination processes were conducted as described in our previous work [13,14,27] chosen, because it has been shown to be the optimal pH for the Fenton's reaction [28]. All solutions were vigorously stirred (300 rpm) with a magnetic bar during treatment.…”

“…Since the BOD5/COD ratio is 0.16 after only 0.25 h of EF treatment on solution alachlor-ER , an increase of the biodegradability can be expected between 0.25 h and 0.5 h of electrolysis, as experimentally confirmed (Table 1). A charge of 2 kC/g of alachlor corresponding to an energy of 1.6 kWh/kg of alachlor is consumed to do the electroreduction of alachlor since the current efficiency has been previously estimated to be about 36 % [27]. Thus, ER-EF pretreatment could be interesting if the total energy that it consumed is lower than 29 kC/g alachlor, which corresponds to a time of 28 min for the EF treatment in these operating conditions.…”

“…Among them, electroreduction reaction can be considered as a green technique to treat pollutants since the addition of a chemical reducing agent is not required. It is also known as an economic and effective method due to its high selectivity for dehalogenation of organic halide pollutants (Fontmorin et al, 2014a ; He et al, 2016 , 2017 , 2018 ; Verlato et al, 2016 ; Lou et al, 2019 , 2020 ), allowing the recovery of iodide ions. Thus, the reductive deiodination of ICM has been applied for the removal of iopamidol with the aim to form controlled intermediates (Yan et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Furthermore, the high selectivity of the reaction on bismuth is noteworthy. Deschloroalachlor yield reached 96%, against 76% on Ni-coated graphite felt modified with silver nanoparticles 35 and 86% with a Co catalyst. 27-28…”
