Niche Partitioning of Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia miyamotoi in the Same Tick Vector and Mammalian Reservoir Species

Abstract: Abstract. The Lyme borreliosis agent Borrelia burgdorferi and the relapsing fever group species Borrelia miyamotoi co-occur in the United States. We used species-specific, quantitative polymerase chain reaction to study both species in the blood and skin of Peromyscus leucopus mice and host-seeking Ixodes scapularis nymphs at a Connecticut site. Bacteremias with B. burgdorferi or B. miyamotoi were most prevalent during periods of greatest activity for nymphs or larvae, respectively. Whereas B. burgdorferi was … Show more

“…The lack of age dependence for B. miyamotoi infection, along with the absence of significant difference in infection rates of the bladder across months, suggests that, unlike B. garinii and B. afzelii, it does not result in persistent infections of the urinary bladder. It has also been shown that skin samples from mice had lower infection rates than blood (Barbour et al 2009), and evaluation of spleen samples suggested that this organ is also not a focus of persistent infection (data not shown). However, we cannot yet exclude the possibility that B. miyamotoi persists in other organs.…”

“…In Japan, B. miyamotoi is carried by the vector tick Ixodes persulcatus, as it is in other parts of Asia (Fukunaga et al 1995, Fomenko 2010. I. scapularis, I. pacificus, and I. ricinus are the vectors in their respective ranges in other parts of the world (Fraenkel et al 2002, Mun et al 2006, Barbour et al 2009). …”

“…As a large proportion of the population rely on herding, the impact of TBPs on domestic livestock is also of interest given that domestic animals can contract TBPs [1,13,24,37] and can serve as a vector for the transfer of infected ticks to humans. Recent studies of domestic animals in Mongolia identified antibody responses to B. burgdorferi , SFGR, and Anaplasma spp.…”

“…Vadon élő rágcsálókban, amelyek újra és újra fertő-ződnek kullancslárvákkal, B. miyamotoi bacteraemia volt megfigyelhető, így fontos szerepük lehet ennek a kór-okozónak a fenntartásában is [11,12].…”
