Nicotine flux as a powerful tool for regulating nicotine delivery from e-cigarettes: Protocol of two complimentary randomized crossover clinical trials

Ahmad El-Hellani,
Elyana Hanna,
Mehak Sharma
et al.

Abstract: Introduction Electronic cigarette (EC) use has increased rapidly in the last decade, especially among youth. Regulating nicotine delivery from ECs could help curb youth uptake and leverage EC use in harm reduction yet is complicated by varying device and liquid variables that affect nicotine delivery. Nicotine flux, the nicotine emission rate, is a parameter that incorporates these variables and focuses on the performance rather than the design of an EC. Nicotine flux therefore could be a powerful regulatory t… Show more

“…To improve the study of nicotine exposure from e-cigarettes, research recommends utilizing nicotine flux to forecast nicotine delivery and the related subjective effects of dependence. 42 Nicotine flux is measured as the amount of nicotine obtained from an e-cigarette per puff per second. 43 With the VUV-AMS's online and direct quantitative capabilities, measuring the nicotine flux of e-cigarettes becomes easily achievable by configuring the VUV-AMS to measure mass spectrum at 1 Hz.…”
