Nicotinic acid as green inhibitor for copper corrosion in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution: experimental and quantum chemical calculations

Abstract: This work reports the inhibition properties of nicotinic acid (NAC) for copper protection during its applications in seawater systems such as water pipelines, shipbuilding, seawater desalination operations and heat exchange systems. The efficiency of nicotinic acid (NAC) as a copper corrosion inhibitor in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution was investigated by Tafel extrapolation and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) methods in the temperature range from 20 to 50 °C. The corrosion parameters and the adsorption i… Show more

“…Under the presence of chitosan in NaCl solution E OC shifts to more negative values and the magnitude of such shifts increases with increasing chitosan concentration. These results suggest that chitosan would exert a predominant cathodic effect in inhibiting copper corrosion in corrosive media [24]. The rise in corrosion potential after the initial decrease is indicative of the interruption of corrosion process by the formation and thickening corrosion products and chitosan film at the copper surface [25].…”

“…Electrochemistry is a multidisciplinary science. It is applied in various sectors such as energy production and / or storage, electrosynthesis, the corrosion phenomena study, analysis, wastewater treatment, chlorine and oxygen production (Liu et al, 2014;Datché et al, 2014;Kambire et al, 2015a;Maman et al2017;Coulibaly et al, 2018). Today, this science has received great attention for the wastewater treatment (Olvera-Vargas et al, 2015;Huguenot et al, 2015;Pohan et al, 2013), due to the ineffectiveness of biological treatments in presence of refractory or recalcitrant molecules (Oller et al, 2011;Sawadogo et al, 2012 ;Ouedraogo et al, 2020).…”

“…Thus, researchers have carried out many works that have focused on several drugs including vitamins. The main objective of this work is the study of the synergistic effect of the two forms of vitamin B3 that are: nicotinicacid (C 6 H 5 NO 2 ) and nicotinicamide (C 6 H 6 N 2 O) (Scheme 1) on the corrosion of copper in 3.5% NaCl medium [10] [11] simulating sea water as well as in one molar nitric acid medium.…”
