Research has shown that mental disorders in working-age individuals are associated with a significant burden of disability, sickness absence, and presenteeism, resulting in lost productivity. This study aims to assess the impact of depressive disorders on the labour markets in the European Union countries, with a particular focus on the disparities between the ‘old’ and ‘new’ EU countries. The study analysed the process of convergence of the burden of depressive disorders among people aged 20–54 in the group of EU-27 countries in the years 1990–2019, using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. The initial hypothesis of persistent inequalities in the system studied was verified. The study measured years lived with disability (YLD) due to depressive disorders in the working-age population. The analysis revealed that depressive disorders have a significant impact on the highly developed economies of the EU-14 countries. The convergence assessment did not confirm the effect of catching up with more favourable economies over time, and the inequalities observed at the beginning of the analysis period worsened. This study’s results expand upon the existing literature on the consequences of depressive disorders by introducing the perspective of inequalities in the studied area. These inequalities were observed between EU-27 economies with varying levels of socio-economic development.

A b s t r a c t. For each individual, extremely important sense of self-fulfillment, autonomy and creative seems to be a control of their own life. Among people with disabilities, there are people well suited for socially satisfied with their lives, often very creative and independent, leading a normal family life, social, professional and even attaining considerable success. As well as there is also a group of people who having a sense of "external control" and marginalization, reducing their chances in social and professional integration. Extremely strongly marked by a category named as automarginalization. While factors or external barriers -still very numerous -resulting in the exclusion of people with disabilities are easy to eliminate by organized social activities and the legal obstacles as many psychological and social are still the main obstacle on the way to genuine social and professional rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. It is difficult to answer and even more difficult to estimate the extent to which the retreating of disabled people attitudes themselves are factors contributing to marginalization. It should be emphasized that such attitudes are often the result of subtle linkages emerging as a result of the impact of multiple external barriers. However, note the presence of such automarginalization factors; their existence constitutes an important element of the vicious circle of marginalization.

This short report discusses issues related to the employment policy and vocational activity support system for people with intellectual disabilities in Poland. The analyses are based on data from a broader research project entitled Employment and Disability. The reconstruction of the Vocational Experience of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities in Poland. The project sought to explore the work-related situation of persons with intellectual disabilities regarding the employment policy, support practices in workplaces, and vocational experience of employees with intellectual disabilities, their job coaches and the coordinators of employment projects. The methodological framework combined the grounded theory set in social constructivism, as presented in Charmaz’s works, with discourse analysis and the sociologically-oriented analysis of practices. The data were collected in 25 workplaces employing persons with disabilities in various parts of Poland, mainly by means of in-depth interviews, observation, and field notes. Although analyses discussing the specificity of Polish employment policy indicate that the vocational activity of persons with intellectual disabilities is promoted in Poland, in reality its implementation is difficult. The difficulties result from the poor quality law regulating vocational activity, lack of adequate legislative solutions, barriers on the part of employers, and the absence of sufficient financial support.
