Nietzsche's Orientation toward the Future

Abstract: Nietzsche assumed that the time to understand him was yet to come, perhaps after one or two centuries. We cannot say whether this time has come yet because nobody can say that he or she understands Nietzsche as he wanted to be understood. But we can track what he wrote about his future and then draw our own conclusions. Although he often spoke about it, Nietzsche's future has rarely become a topic in Nietzsche research. It might however be especially important for younger generations. After a short review of N… Show more

“…However, the more likely cause is innate human irrationality. The Genealogy of Morality declares that philosophers should serve as 'guarantors of the future' (GM, 2014/1887, p. 91; see Stegmaier, 2016). “…In the preface to his early lectures on education, Nietzsche insists that philosophy must be a “meditation” on possible types of futures for humanity ( On the Future of Our Educational Institutions , 2016 /1872, hereafter FE, 94; Reitter et al 2015 ). In the Genealogy of Morality Nietzsche claims that philosophers should serve as “guarantors of the future” ( Genealogy of Morality, hereafter GM, 2014 /1887, III [14], 91; see Stegmaier 2016 ). Rather than searching for universal truth, the Gay Science claims that philosophy must issue commands that promote “health, growth, future, power, life” ( Gay Science, hereafter GS, 2001 /1887, 2nd Edition Preface [2], 6; see Clark 1990 ).…”

“…In the nineteenth century, Nietzsche carves out a unique role for philosophers as "guarantors of the future" (2014/1887, III [14]: p. 91; see Stegmaier 2016). Philosophy's method is to create new values, rank-order values, and furnish genealogies of values.…”
