Nighttime Vitality and Its Relationship to Urban Diversity: An Exploratory Analysis in Shenzhen, China

Abstract: Relationship between urban diversity and urban vitality is imperative for guiding better design in urban development, though existing frameworks are not able to efficiently examine the relationship at multiple scales. In this article, we propose a new framework to integrate nighttime light (NTL) imagery and multisource urban data into multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) models to examine the varying relationship between diversity and vitality across space and time. NTL is used as a proxy for u… Show more

“…Meanwhile, it is surprising that land-use mix is not associated with VI in either the overall model or the models for each age group, which is remarkably different from previous studies. For instance, some empirical studies in cities such as Shenzhen and Seoul show that land-use mix and spatial interaction diversity have a significant contribution to urban vibrancy ( 40 , 59 , 60 ). The reason may be as follow: People are able to accomplish their travel purposes in a relatively small range in TOD with a high land-use mix, which may restrict the mobility and redistribution of people.…”

“…Specifically, density reflects the activity density of a place that has often been calculated by population and building numbers per spatial unit. Diversity indicates the intensity of miscellaneous urban functions and services, while design assesses the urban structure, such as road networks and pedestrian-oriented infrastructure ( Zhang et al, 2021 ). Destination accessibility evaluates the ease of access to trip attractions, and distance to transit is often considered as the distance from the residences to the nearest public transit hubs.…”

“…To address this weakness, Fotheringham proposed the MGWR method in 2017. Yu et al in 2019 refined the statistical inference method for MGWR, offering the possibility of the general application of MGWR in empirical studies [ 23 , 34 , 35 ].…”
