Nimodipine versus Flunarizine in Common Migraine: A Controlled Pilot Trial

Abstract: SYNOPSISThe effects of Nimodipine and Flunarizine, both calcium-antagonist drugs, in the prevention of common migraine were investigated in a double-blind randomized parallel study. Five patients of the 30 included in the study dropped out because of adverse reactions. Two were treated with Nimodipine and three with Flunarizine. Our results suggest a similar efficacy for both drugs, although Nimodipine seems to have a shorter latency of effect. Nimodipine is a useful new agent for common migraine prevention. (… Show more

“…In general, benefit was observed within 1-2 months after beginning of treatment (141,(145)(146)(147)(148)(149). Another randomized, controlled study of 24-weeks' duration did not report substantial benefit of nimodipine 120 mg daily in patients with common or classic migraine (142,150).…”

“…Numerous controlled clinical studies have established that flunarizine is efficacious in migraine prophylaxis, including double-blind studies in which the drug was compared with placebo 18 and the anti-migraine drugs pizotifen, 19 ß-blockers 20 and nimodipine. 21 Our group conducted the latter study, a multicentre double-blind trial with parallel groups in which flunarizine at 10 mg/day was compared with nimodipine at 120 mg/day; the study conclusion was that flunarizine was efficacious in migraine prophylaxis. The studies cited above all used flunarize at 10 mg/day.…”

“…The most effective CCH prophylactic today is lithium carbonate 2 but long-term use of this drug is limited by the likelihood of side effects. 3 Recently, calcium antagonists have been successfully employed to prevent migraine 4,5,6,7,8,9 and preliminary studies also indicate that verapamil in particular is an efficacious treatment for CCH 6 ; such studies in CCH have been of the open type, however, and there is a clear requirement for a double blind trial to verify or refute these initial findings. With this aim we conducted a multicentre double-blind trial comparing verapamil with the established efficacy of lithium carbonate.…”
