The effects of probiotic supplementation on systemic health and gastrointestinal diseases have been investigated in numerous studies. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of probiotics and their effects on periodontal health. Probiotics show beneficial effects as adjunctive therapeutics and as stand‐alone agents in the treatment and prevention of gingivitis as well as specific clinical parameters of periodontitis. This review focuses on the clinical and microbiological aspects of probiotics in the context of health, gingivitis, and periodontitis. In addition, a special focus on nisin‐producing probiotics and nisin itself showcase their significant potential for oral and systemic use.

A successful pregnancy depends on not only the tolerance of the fetal immune system by the mother but also resistance against the threat of hazardous microorganisms. Infection with pathogenic microorganisms during pregnancy may lead to premature delivery, miscarriage, growth restriction, neonatal morbidity, and other adverse outcomes. Moreover, the host also has an intact immune system to avoid these adverse outcomes. It is important to note the presence of normal bacteria in the maternal reproductive tract and the principal role of the maternal-placental-fetal interaction in antimicrobial immunity. Previous studies mainly focused on maternal infection during pregnancy. However, this review summarizes the new views on the study of the maternal microbiome and expounds the innate immune defense mechanism of the maternal vagina and decidua as well as how cytotrophoblasts and syncytiotrophoblasts recognize and kill bacteria in the placenta. Fetal immune systems, thought to be weak, also exhibit an immune defense function that is indispensable for maintaining the safety of the fetus. The skin, lungs, and intestines of the fetus during pregnancy constitute the main immune barriers. These findings will provide a new understanding of the effects of normal microbial flora and how the host resists harmful microbes during pregnancy. We believe that it may also contribute to the reference on the clinical prevention and treatment of gestational infection to avoid adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Bovine endometritis is the most common reproductive disease in the world and often causes infertility (Kasimanickam et al., 2006;Sheldon et al., 2019;Zhao et al., 2019a). Studies have shown that the incidence of bovine endometritis is as high as 40% and is gradually increasing every year (Carneiro et al., 2014;Wagener et al., 2017). Thus, this disease has seriously endangered the development of the breeding and dairy industries, causing tremendous economic losses worldwide (Marini et al., 2016; Nyabinwa et al., 2020; Swangchan-Uthai et al., 2012). The primary cause of bovine endometritis is bacterial infection after reproduction, which reduces the resistance of the endometrium, resulting in damage to the cow's endometrium. (Pothmann et al., 2015; Wathes, 2012). However, this disease is unavoidable in large-scale intensive breeding and breeding environments (Thompson et al., 2019).
