Nitrate Contents of Sudangrass and Barley Forages Grown on Plots Treated with Animal Manures1

Abstract: In areas of high concentrations of domestic animals, such as the Chino‐Corona Basin in southern California, there is a tendency to use large amounts of manures on adjacent croplands. In these situations, there is a need to know the upper safe limits of manure use for protection of animals from excess nitrate (NO‐3) in forage and for the protection of groundwaters from NO‐3 and soluble salts. A field trial on the Moreno Farm of the Univ. of California, Riverside was conducted to respond to these needs. This pap… Show more

“…Hence, excessive livestock wastes are often applied on limited areas of forage crop fields. Excessive manuring causes lower qualities of feed, such as high accumulation of nitrate‐N (Pratt et al . 1976; Sugihara et al .…”

“…Sudangrass is a major summer forage crop for round bale silage in Japan. Nitrate‐N accumulation in Sudangrass is a serious problem, as it has a high potential for nitrate‐N accumulation under large amounts of nitrogen fertilizer application (Harms and Tucker 1973; Pratt et al . 1976; Zhang et al .…”
