Nitric oxide reductases in bacteria

Abstract: Nitric oxide reductases (NORs) that are found in bacteria belong to the large enzyme family which includes cytochrome oxidases. Two types of bacterial NORs have been characterised. One is a cytochrome bc-type complex (cNOR) that receives electrons from soluble redox protein donors, whereas the other type (qNOR) lacks the cytochrome c component and uses quinol as the electron donor. The latter enzyme is present in several pathogens that are not denitrifiers. We summarise the current knowledge on bacterial NORs,… Show more

“…2. Nitric oxide reductase is the primary enzyme in a chain of catalytic reactions leading to the production of N 2 O (Hino et al, 2010;Hendriks et al, 2000). The catalytic cycle involving production of N 2 O from NO has yet to be completely understood with respect to the formation of the N-N double bond, the complexity of the structural information of nitric oxide reductase, the proton transfer pathway into nitric oxide reductase (Tosha and Shiro, 2013), and the very short lifetime of the intermediate states of the molecules (Collman et al, 2008).…”

“…Toyoda et al (2002) proposed that nitrification should yield δ 15 N α enriched N 2 O due to the existence of a hyponitrite (-ONNO-) intermediary followed by the selective breakage of the NO bond where the lightest isotopes are located, based on the ZPE (zero point energy) for N 2 O (Zuñiga et al, 2003). This mechanism has been described for some nitric oxide reductases (Hendriks et al, 2000;Wasser et al, 2002). Culture experiments carried out by Sutka et al (2006) show that ammonium oxidation carried out by ammonium oxidizers (i.e.…”

“…The pathways of biological N 2 O production include partial dissimilatory nitrate or nitrite reduction (denitrification), nitrifier denitrification (Wrage et al, 2001), ammonia (hydroxylamine) oxidation and NOx detoxification (also known as the 'nitrosative stress' pathway) (Hendriks et al, 2000). Nitrification-related pathways (nitrifier denitrification and ammonia oxidation) mediated by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) are known to be a major source of N 2 O production from terrestrial environments (Gö dde and Conrad, 1999).…”
