We investigated the growth and bioremediation potential of five local seaweed species (Codium fragile, Ulva pertusa, Ecklonia stolonifera, Saccharina japonica and Gracilariopsis chorda), using an integrated fish-seaweed culture system as a biofilter for effluents from black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) tanks. The specific growth rate, biomass and net yield values of green algae were higher than those of brown algae. The tissue N and P levels of all species increased at the end of the experiment, but N:P ratios varied among seaweed species. The uptake rate and efficiency of total ammonia nitrogen uptake were the highest in U. pertusa and lowest in S. japonica. The phosphate uptake efficiency among all species ranged from 43% for S. japonica to 30% for G. chorda. These results suggest that all species can efficiently remove enriched nitrogen and phosphorus from fish tank effluents and are suitable for integrated aquaculture and bioremediation. However, inter-specific differences were observed among seaweeds with regard to the biofiltration performance for different forms of nitrogen. The highest total oxidized nitrogen (ToxN) uptake efficiency was observed in E. stolonifera and S. japonica, while the lowest was observed in U. pertusa. ToxN uptake rates of E. stolonifera and S. japonica was 1.8 times higher than that of U. pertusa. Thus, a seaweed polyculture that included species with varying nitrogen source-specific biofiltration activities might allow us to remove nutrients from effluents more effectively. These results provide valuable information regarding the selection of optimal seaweed species in fish-seaweed integrated systems.

Ocean acidification (OA) and coastal eutrophication affect coastal marine organisms. We studied the physiological responses of Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis (Gracilariales, Rhodophyta) to increased concentrations of CO 2 and NH 4 + . Incubation treatments were applied at two different pH units (low, 7.5; high (control), 7.9) and three different NH 4 + concentrations (low, 10; medium, 50; high, 100 μM). Growth, rates of photosynthetic oxygen evolution, and NH 4 + uptake rates were affected by both elevated CO 2 and NH 4 + conditions. The changes in the pH of culture media were influenced by elevated CO 2 or NH 4 + treatments. However, chlorophyll fluorescence was affected only by the level of NH 4 + . These results indicate that the physiological responses of G. lemaneiformis might be enhanced when the concentrations of CO 2 and NH 4 + rise. Therefore, cultures of this alga could provide a good mitigation solution against ongoing problems with OA and coastal eutrophication.

AbstractKorea has a long history of utilizing seaweeds, as the country has a high biodiversity of seaweeds. The abundance and composition of seaweed species have changed over the past decades due to climate change and anthropogenic influences. Some species showed a significant extension of their distribution range to the north while some species declined. Some areas have even become barren ground. Korea has put extensive effort into restoring the seaweed resources in these deforested areas. Korea is one of the most advanced countries in the World in terms of seaweed aquaculture. However, the aquacultured species are mostly limited to three genera, Saccharina, Undaria and Pyropia/Porphyra, which represent 96% of the entire seaweed production in the country. Korea has developed highly advanced cultivation technologies as well as various cultivars using breeding and hybridization technologies for these species. There has also been considerable effort in developing environmentally sustainable aquaculture systems using seaweed cultivation (e. g. integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, nutrient bioextraction and biofloc). This study discusses the current status and challenges of the above mentioned topics in detail. In addition, the present study encourages South and North Korean scientists to collaborate in the study of seaweed resources at the border of these two countries.
