Nitrogen Fertilization of Marandu Palisadegrass under Different Periods of Deferment

Abstract: The goal with this study was to evaluate the morphological characteristics, nutritive value and the forage dry matter (DM) accumulation of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu in different stages of deferment under nitrogen fertilization levels. The experimental design was a randomized block in split-plot, with three replicates. Plot treatments corresponded to two levels of fertilization (with and without). Split-plot treatments corresponded to four deferment periods (March, April, May, June). Plant height and for… Show more

“…As deferment progresses, forage grows to maximize light interception, leading to competition and stem elongation as plants seek light exposure at the canopy's top. Over time, stem mass increases while green leaf mass decreases until tissue senescence sets in (Loreto et al, 2019).…”

“…Extended deferment encourages tissue growth and elongation, enabling plants to achieve greater heights (Prado et al, 2019;Loreto et al, 2019;Gouveia et al, 2017). Although reducing regrowth days decreases TDM, it results in a forage composition more suitable for animal consumption, characterized by lower stem dry mass (SDM), dead material dry mass (DMDM), higher LDM, and a better L/S ratio.…”

“…Stockpiling is a management strategy that aims to accumulate forage to be supplied to animals during periods of food scarcity, minimizing the effects of seasonality on forage production marked by water deficit (2) . Pasture stockpiled for long periods generally has a higher accumulation of dead forage in its composition, consisting of a fraction that is more fibrous and has lower nutritional value due to senescence (3) .…”
