NK/T-Cell Lymphoma of the Nasal Cavity Causing Contralateral Dacryoadenitis

Abstract: Dacryoadenitis can be a clinical manifestation of NK/T-cell lymphoma. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of nasal NK/T-cell lymphoma with contralateral dacryoadenitis.

“…Staphyloccus aureus ( 30 ), Nocardia farcinica ( 31 ), Mycobacterium fortuitum, M. marinum ( 32 ), Leishmania infantum ( 33 ), and EBV ( 9 11 , 34 ) are among the suspected causative agents. Mucoralean fungi have been reported to cause infections with highly similar clinical features ( 1 , 24 26 ). Particularly, M. irregularis ( 28 , 29 ) shows resemblance because this species causes chronic infection in patients without an apparent underlying disease, in contrast to other Mucoralean members which are usually acute in patients with leukemia or ketoacidotic diabetes.…”

“…Some LMG patients received chemotherapy, but post-mortem , the cause of their disorder was shown to be fungal ( 24 , 25 ). In patients primarily diagnosed with ROCM, the detection of NK cells and/or T cells in the tissue led to a change of diagnosis to from ROCM to LMG, with a fatal outcome ( 1 , 26 ). In another paper, two ROCM cases were reported with NK/T cells and angiocentric characteristics.…”

“…The sample should be forwarded to an experienced pathologist for assessment while fresh [ 1 , 24 ]. Establishing the diagnosis is difficult because NK/T-cell lymphoma displays extensive necrosis and a small number of cancer cells in the affected area [ 15 , 25 ].…”

“…An infection caused by P. Aeruginosa can mimic NK/T-cell lymphoma [ 5 ], as was the case with our patient. Cases suggestive of periorbital cellulitis were also reported before establishing the definitive diagnosis of NK/T-cell lymphoma [ 5 , 18 , 25 , 27 ].…”

“…Many were described with rapid disease progression and death 5 6. Two cases were associated with dacrocystitis or orbital cellulitis,7 8 but no previous cases have described orbital complications to the extent of the formation of an extraconal subperiosteal phlegmon. NK/T cell lymphoma is known to cause palatal perforation9 and naso-oral fistulae in some cases 10.…”
