“…The present study, where depressive-like behaviour is observed in the MgD mice, is thus in line with a previous report, demonstrating depressive-like behaviour following 3 weeks on dietary MgD (27). Supporting the observed depressive-like phenotype in MgD fed mice, studies have shown that administration of Mg elevates the serum levels of Mg, and reduce time spent immobile in the FST, suggesting Mg to act as an antidepressant in the FST (34,35). The importance of these findings in translational setting is underlined by several studies demonstrating a clear connection between the level of Mg and affective symptomatology (36).…”

“…Interestingly, blocking the NMDAr by antagonists has shown increased NMDAr/α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid receptor density in hippocampus and to simulate antidepressant effect (41) as well as the co-administration of Mg (34,43). Mg depletion may also play a role in the monoaminergic systems as Mg is a cofactor in activating tryptophan, a precursor in dopamine and serotonin synthesis (26,44).…”

“…Glavni mehanizam kojim magnezijum ostvaruje svoje efekte u centralnom nervnom sistemu (CNS) zasniva se na interakciji sa glutamatergičkim neurotransmiterskim sistemom, odnosno blokadi NMDA receptora (8,9).…”

“…Apomorphine--and L--amphetamine mediated behaviour was suppressed by Mg deficiency, suggesting that Mg is an important factor for the stimulatory action of catecholamines, possibly at the postsynaptic site. In the forced swim test, a screening test for possible antidepressive potency of substances, Mg reduced immobility similar to the nor--adrenaline reuptake inhibitor imipramine (Decollogne et al, 1997). Compared to control mice fed a normal diet, mice receiving a low Mg diet (10% of daily requirement) for several weeks displayed increased immobility time in the forced swim test, indicating enhanced depression--like behaviour.…”

“…At normal neuronal resting membrane potentials, pores of the NMDA glutamate--gated ion channels are blocked by Mg 2+ ions (Bear et al, 2001;Mark et al, 2001;Kandel et al, 1995;McMenimen, 2006). The ion channel of the NMDA receptor complex is subject to voltage--dependent regulation by Mg 2+ ions (Mark et al, 2001;Alberts et al, 2002;Decollogne et al, 1997). Importantly, different types of NMDA receptors exist, on the basis of their constitution subunits.…”
