Evaluating the maturity of peach fruit is desirable during both the preharvest and postharvest periods, and flesh firmness (FF) is a representative maturity index. Although a non-destructive FF measurement technique using visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been developed, the principle has been unclear. This study was conducted to examine the structure of the FF prediction model by comparing with that of the model for measuring water-soluble pectin (WSP) content. Those two prediction models have the same information regions related to the colors of pericarp and mesocarp (chlorophyll) and to a water band in the NIR region. Moreover, a statistical heterospectroscopy analysis between NIR and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra suggests the possibility that absorptions of methanol and succinate as well as galacturonic acid embedded in a water band play important roles in predicting FF. This approach would enhance the reliability of nondestructive VIS-NIR prediction models in many practical situations.

We previously reported that oral administration of heat‐killed Lactococcus lactis H61 improves certain human skin properties. For topical application of this strain, we reasoned that a bacterial cell extract obtained with an aqueous solvent could be readily formulated as a cosmetic ingredient. In the present study, we characterized the water extract from heat‐killed H61. The extract had inhibitory activity for angiotensin‐converting enzyme, which is known as suppression of inflammation of skin, and absorbed electromagnetic radiation in the UVB range. UVB‐irradiated normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEKs) had lower viability than nonirradiated NHEKs. The NHEK survival rate was significantly higher in cells treated with the extract at 10 mg dried cells per ml prior to UVB exposure than in untreated cells or cells treated with lower extract concentrations. At this concentration, the extract also inhibited the production of interleukin‐8 induced by UVB. The extract did not protect against hydrogen peroxide‐induced cell damage. These data indicate that topical application of the H61 extract alleviates UVB damage and reduces inflammation in skin cells. The present study expands the potential application of strain H61 to its use as a cosmetic ingredient in addition to its use in the food industry. Significance and Impact of the Study In our previous report, oral administration of heat‐killed Lactococcus lactis H61 improved certain human skin properties. This study aimed exploring the potential topical use of this strain. The water extract derived from heat‐killed cells with angiotensin‐converting enzyme inhibitory activity, which is known as suppression of inflammation of skin, could protect normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEKs) from damage caused by UVB. Higher interleukin‐8 production by UVB‐exposed NHEKs than nontreated cells was suppressed by addition of the extract. The extract absorbed electromagnetic radiation in the UVB range. This extract could help in the maintenance of skin health by suppressing inflammation.

Fungal disease resistance of perspective sugar beet varieties and their yield potential

The research was conducted on 11 sugar beet varieties, grown at the Rumokai Experimental Station of the Lithuanian Research Center for Agriculture and Forestry, in 2016 and 2017. The experiments were carried out on two backgrounds: the crops were not sprayed and sprayed with fungicide epoxiconazole 125 g l–1. During the study years, rust (causative agent Uromyces beticola), powdery mildew (causative agent Erysiphe betae Vaňha Weltzien) and leaf spot disease (causative agent Cercospora beticola Sacc.) were the most prevalent in sugar beet. Rust, the intensity of which was 9.66–61.79%, caused most damage to sugar beet. The intensity of powdery mildew was 12.71–55.98% and that of leaf spot disease was 7.47–54.23%. Of the investigated varieties of sugar beet, the most sensitive to leaf spot disease were ‘Merens’, ‘Balear’, ‘Davinci’, ‘Kashmir’ and ‘Pottok’, the most resistant were ‘Berton’, ‘Selma KWS’ and ‘Wellington’. ‘Merens’ and ‘Texel’ were the most sensitive to rust. This disease was least damaging to the ‘Minta’, ‘Berton’ and ‘Strauss’ varieties. Powdery mildew was most harmful to leaves of the ‘Merens’, ‘Balear’ and ‘Minta’ varieties of sugar beet. The most resistant to powdery mildew was ‘Texel’. According to the average two-year data, the most productive was the ‘Pottok’ variety, whose root yield was 90.46– 93.85 t ha–1. The ‘Straus’ variety had the highest sugar content. Epoxiconazole increased the sugar beet yield from 0.44 to 6.53 t ha–1 in 2016 and from 0.07 to 11.63 t ha–1 in 2017.
