“…In all cases, the values of the tilt angle, and in particular the limiting values of this angle, agree with each other and with the values obtained for other smectogens. [28,29] Moreover, for the 11EB1M7 biphenyl-D 8 [25] and ZLL7/ * biphenyl-D 2 [26] mesogens, the tilt angles evaluated by means of X-ray spectroscopy are in very good agreement with those obtained by 2 H NMR measurements, which confirms the consistency of this method for evaluating tilt angles in tilted phases.…”

“…In the common case in which the helix of the SmC * phase is not unwound by the magnetic field, the procedure used to evaluate the tilt angle q from NMR measurements consists of extrapolating the principal order parameter from the more ordered phase, typically the SmA phase, in the SmC * temperature range, and comparing these extrapolated values with those experimentally found. [28] The validity of this procedure is checked in this work by comparing the tilt angles obtained in previous studies [29] with those evaluated directly from the order parameters of the SmC * and uSmC * phases of the three studied smectogens.…”

“…These data are compared with those obtained in the SmA and SmC* phases for the ZLL 7/* sample and with those reported in the literature for other FLCs. [3,9,12,13] …”

“…2 H represents the nucleus [9] most widely investigated; however, 1 H, 15 N, and 13 C nuclei could also give a wealth of information, [3] even though in these cases the overlapping of resonances coming from the nonequivalent spins in the molecule makes the analysis of relaxation times not so trivial. Among the 2 H relaxation times, [9] the two spin-lattice relaxation times, T 1Z and T 1Q (Zeeman and quadrupolar, respectively), are particularly sensitive to motions with correlation times of the same order of magnitude as the inverse of the Larmor frequency, that is, in the range of 10…”

“…In the final part of the paper by Wenzel and Wilcox, state-of-art of CLC methodology up to 2003 is reviewed. Very recently, Domenici et al published paper describing the possibilities of NMR techniques in the field of searching the structure, dynamics, and orientational order in chiral and achiral smectic phases (58).…”
