As the population continues to age, new challenges emerge for health services to face. Support workers and other health professionals must be in a position to provide information and services that help patients face issues that arise from ageing and help prevent against infection. People with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are living longer as a result of routine testing, early diagnosis and the use of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). As a result, the nursing, medical, emotional and social issues associated with ageing are compounded by a number of HIV-related challenges, and health professionals are increasingly required to help ensure those with HIV can maintain a good quality of life for longer. This article considers the needs of people with HIV who are aged 50 years and older and the issues that may impact on their health and wellbeing.
