Nodulation of Retama monosperma by Ensifer aridi in an Abandonned Lead Mine Soils in Eastern Morocco

Abstract: Millions tons of lead and zinc wastes from the abandoned Touissit mine are stored in the open air as dikes in the vicinity of the villages in Eastern Morocco and pose a real danger to both the environment and local populations. To prevent the movement of minerals to the nearby villages and limit the damages to the environment and health, we proposed the nitrogen-fixing leguminous shrub Retama monosperma , as a model plant to use for phytostabilization experimentations. This plant species… Show more

“…Retama species are leguminous plants of agronomic interest for biofertilization, dune stabilization, and revegetation of semiarid and arid ecosystems, notably due to their capacity to form symbiosis with N-fixing rhizobial species (Selami et al, 2014). Despite this importance, the symbiotic interaction between Retama and rhizobia species and with nonrhizobial endophytes remains largely understudied (Ahnia et al, 2018;Lamin et al, 2019). Here, we isolated an endophytic bacterium from Retama monosperma root nodules and identified it as a Bacillus megaterium strain by whole genome sequencing.…”

“…Morocco [5]. The ability to develop the symbiosis with locally growing legume species was proposed to be due to accessory genome variations among strains, which most probably result from large plasmid exchanges through horizontal gene transfer [6].…”
