Noise analysis for near-field 3D FM-CW radar imaging systems

Abstract: Near field radar imaging systems are used for demanding security applications including concealed weapon detection in airports and other high-security venues. Despite the near-field operation, phase noise and thermal noise can limit performance in several ways. Practical imaging systems can employ arrays with low gain antennas and relatively large signal distribution networks that have substantial losses which limit transmit power and increase the effective noise figure of the receiver chain, resulting in subs… Show more

“…This extremely wide bandwidth will result in five-millimeter depth resolution which enhances the accuracy of object characterization results. The mm-wave readily passes through clothing materials and is reflected by concealed objects as well as the human body, which is highly conductive at mm-wave frequencies [12][13]45]. Furthermore, an ATR preprocessor uses one of four 2D projected images with the best view of the…”

“…High-accuracy millimeter-wave (mm-wave) screening is an efficient solution to identify concealed terrorist threats or contraband, and is the primary full-body imaging technology used in airports by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) [1][2][3]. Mm-waves can readily pass through clothes but are reflected by the surface of the human body and by concealed objects [4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Several innovative techniques have recently been proposed to improve the efficiency of mm-wave screening systems [6,.…”

Several innovative techniques have recently been proposed to improve the efficiency of mm-wave screening systems [6,. In particular, Sheen and Hall developed more efficient reconstruction and calibration techniques to optimize the depth information [14].…”
