Noise Exposure and Hearing Loss among Brewery Workers in Lagos, Nigeria

Abstract: The health risks of exposure to loud noises are a well-established fact and are widely addressed in modern industries. Yet, in less developed countries, it is thought these hazards receive less attention, both in the workplace and in private life. (1) Background: The aim of this study is to assess the occupational noise exposure in a developing country and identify possible risk groups for whom intervention is needed. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study was performed among brewery employees in Lagos, Nigeria.… Show more

“…Furthermore, we also found a significant association between the duration of noise exposure and noise-induced hearing loss. The respondents had an average duration of weekly noise exposure of 23 h 28 min ± 13 h 32 min, while Wouters et al [13] in Nigeria, reported among the workers of a brewery in Lagos, an average duration of weekly noise exposure greater than ours (51 h ± 15 h 57 min). It therefore appears that the subjects exposed to the noise of the mills in the markets of Parakou were mainly full-time workers, working for more than 8 hours in a noisy environment affecting their hearing.…”

“…Environmental noise is everywhere. However, when people work and live in a high-noise environment for a long time, it brings great risks to people’s health, such as hearing loss and noise trouble [ 1 , 2 ]. As people mainly work and live in indoor environments, the application scenarios of noise control are also mainly aimed at indoor environmental noise.…”

“…Basner et al [15] studied the effects of noise on hearing, and found hearing loss caused by noise is very common in working environments. Studies [16][17][18][19][20][21][22] have also found that high noise levels can cause hearing loss and general health problems. Masterson et al [23] studied the hearing loss of workers exposed to noise from 2003 to 2012 and found 76% mining workers are exposed to dangerous noise.…”
