Noise levels in the dialysis unit and its relationship with sleep quality and anxiety in patients receiving HD: A pilot study

Abstract: Introduction: HD unit is a noisy environment for patients, and noise can affect anxiety levels and sleep quality. Methods: The aim of the study is to determine noise level, the relationship between noise levels, and sleep quality and anxiety in patients in HD unit. A descriptive and observational study design was used. Three Benetech GM1351 manual sound-level meters were used to measure noise. A patient information form, the State Anxiety Inventory, and the modified Post-Sleep Inventory were used for data coll… Show more

“…The noise levels of dialysis machine exceed the recommended level and it also affected the patients' mental wellbeing. 10 Acoustic settings in neonatal ICU were also checked and compared between daytime and night shifts. Measures to decrease the noise were advised in order to decrease the potential adverse effects on patients.…”

“…Possibly impacting the effectiveness of mindfulness therapy is the mode of delivery. HD clinics are known to be loud and distracting [23], which may limit the therapeutic effects of traditional mindfulness therapy. Full immersive VR has the ability to "actively distract" HD patients, which has been suggested as one possible mechanism for VR's therapeutic effect [27].…”

“…While the benefits of mindfulness have been seen in other chronic diseases [18][19][20][21], mixed results are evident in HD patients [22]. However, the limited efficacy of mindfulness therapy in HD may be due, in part, to disruptions caused by noises and other distractions in the HD clinics [23]. Implementing alternative modes of delivering mindfulness therapy may be efficacious for in-center HD patients.…”
