Noise-Like Pulse Generation Using Polarization Maintaining Mode-Locked Thulium-Doped Fiber Laser With Nonlinear Amplifying Loop Mirror

Abstract: We investigate noise-like pulse (NLP) generation in a mode-locked thuliumdoped fiber laser with nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) and different net anomalous dispersions. The all-polarization maintaining (PM) fiber oscillator generates pulse trains with a frequency adjustable in the range of 4.06-20.4 MHz by utilizing different lengths of PM passive fiber in the NALM loop. An NLP with a coherence spike width of 232 fs was generated at 1993.6 nm with a 3-dB spectral width of 32.6 nm when the net cavity di… Show more

“…We used the aforementioned photodetector and a 63 GHz digital oscilloscope (DSO-X 96204Q, Keysight Technologies, Inc.) to check the pulse characteristics. [14], [15]. This means that the NAbLM can still function well when the loop is not long and in a considerably different dispersion regime.…”

“…The available choice of artificial saturable absorbers used for mode locking in fibre lasers may be consulted in [16]. In configurations for generation of noise-like pulses, such artificial saturable absorbers are most frequently used as NPE, non-linear optical loop mirrors [24][25][26][27], non-linear amplifying loop mirrors [28][29][30][31], and spatial filters relying on fibre type transitions such as SMF-MMF-SMF [32][33][34][35][36]. It does not appear possible to name a certain of these absorbers as the best, since all of them have their own peculiar advantages and drawbacks.…”

“…NLP can be generated with different techniques: saturable absorber [14,15], nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) [16][17][18][19], nonlinear optical loop mirrors(NOLM) [20], nonlinear amplifying loop mirror(NALM) [21][22][23][24], and NOLM in combination with NPR [25]. [25].…”

“…In this paper, we report an all-PM all-fiber TDFL based on NOLM operating at NLP regimes with a broadband spectrum. Compared with the previously reported NLP generation oscillator based on NALM [22,23], we choose only a piece of short thulium-doped fiber (9.5 cm) as the gain medium and only one pump source, which makes our laser more efficient and economical. In this way, a modelocked fiber laser with 32 nm FWHM and 13.51 nJ pulse energy at the fundamental pulse repetition frequency of 5.96 MHz is achieved at noise-like pulse regimes.…”
