“…If the sources are analyzed separately, it is noticeable that among the subjects who felt annoyed by the noise in his/her home, 50% pointed out the traffic noise was the main source of annoyance, 34% the street noise. Findings of the study showed that traffic noise has negative impacts on human health, as is reported by others (Mato and Mufuruki, 1999;Georgiadou et al, 2004). Maschke (2001) and Babisch et al (1999) have pointed out some effects of the noise over urban inhabitants: irritability, insomnia, difficulty to concentrate and headaches.…”

“…Periodic spikes in noise levels occurring at irregular intervals might also be more difficult for birds to habituate to than to constant background noise only a few decibels lower in intensity. Additionally, these higher peaks of noise generated sporadically may reach some threshold beyond which even less sensitive birds are affected, just as there is a threshold of noise intensity at which sounds become first an irritant to people and then actually harmful (e.g., Mato and Mufuruki 1999). Because spikes in noise levels did occur irregularly, the chances of observing bird responses to any particular spike in intensity were low and would likely not be adequately represented in my data.…”

“…Noise pollution has been stated as a serious health hazard (Bies and Hansen, 1996), with noise-related damage to humans ranging from annoyance to insanity and death (Mato and Mufuruki, 1999). Maschke (1999) treated the impact of noise as a stress inductor, and stated that induced stress by noise has a psychosocial component.…”

“…Adverse effects due to exposure to noise may include interference with speech communication and decreasing children's learning skills (Mato and Mufuruki, 1999). More recently, attempts have been made to estimate health and economic impacts due to noise pollution.…”
