Stamped metal axial flow fans are popularly employed in electric motors as a cooling flow driving impeller. Manufacturing experiences have shown that the edge geometries of the blades have significant effects on the noise level of the electric motors. This paper presents a numerical study on the structures of the air flows driven by a stamped metal cooling fan with blunt edge, sharp edge, and zero thickness blades. The local flow velocities, pressure distributions, and overall flow driving performances are analyzed. The different noise generation levels due to the blade edge geometries are explained and correlated to the fluid flow process at various fan working conditions. Guidelines on the implementation of sharp edge stamped metal cooling fans in electric motors are provided.
