Noise Reduction on Received Signals in Wireless Ultraviolet Communications Using Wavelet Transform

Abstract: In wireless ultraviolet optical communications, noise is one of the most essential factors affecting the communication system performance. This paper presents a scheme of reducing noise in the received ultraviolet signal using wavelet transform algorithms. An effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) calculation method for the received signals is also proposed, and adopted by our wavelet denoising scheme so that an optimal wavelet basis function can be selected. The proposed denoising method is applied to both the… Show more

“…Wavelet transformation provides localization in both the time and frequency domains by calculating wavelet coe cients through the convolution of the observed signals and a wavelet [15,16]. Wavelet-based de-noising algorithms are typically better than classical de-noising algorithms [17]. Because wavelet thresholding algorithms are straightforward and simple to implement, they have been widely used for noise reduction [18,19].…”

“…Researchers have conducted extensive studies on short-range UV communication channel modeling, including the closed approximation model, 1 , 2 single scattering model in spherical coordinate system, 3 , 4 Monte Carlo elevation difference model, 5 and UV multiple scattering model 6 , 7 . Using these models, researchers have studied the UV channel characteristics, including the communication link performance with a bit error rate (BER) lower than 103 under solar blind and NLOS conditions, 8 path loss of the UV scattering channel under fog and haze weather conditions, 9 verification of UV pulse broadening in NLOS communication channels, 10 noise reduction of received signals in wireless UV communication systems, 11 , 12 etc. The above works have helped to promote the development of short-range UV communication.…”

“…Additive white Gaussian noise level estimation is a fundamental process in many fields, such as biomedical signal processing [1], [2], communication system [3], [4] and image processing [5], [6]. Removing this unavoidable noise is an essential step prior to any farther processing in these systems.…”
