Non-AIDS-Defining Malignancies in the HIV-Infected Population

Abstract: With the advent of effective combination of antiretroviral therapy, HIV infection has been transformed from a fatal disease to a chronic condition. There is renewed clinical interest in long-term morbidities, including malignancies that occur disproportionately within this population. Non-AIDS-defining cancers (NADCs) represent a significant source of morbidity and mortality in the aging HIV-infected population. There is data to suggest that incidence rates are elevated among HIV-infected individuals for many … Show more

“…The incidence of anal SCC was higher in the HAART era, 77.8 per 100,000 men vs. 21.8 per 100,000 men pre-HAART [4], given the improved survival results and therefore a longer possible exposure to HPV infection [5]. Anal SCC is one of the most common non-AIDS-defining cancers [6] and the most common HPV-driven cancer [7], in high-income settings, in HIV-positive patients. Less information related to anal SCC incidence has been published for other groups, but data showed an absolute IR of 12.3 per 100,000 person-years in solid-organ transplant recipients [8].…”

“…1 Immunosuppression in the context of both solid organ transplant as well as HIV has been associated with a higher rate of opportunistic infections and malignancies, 2-10 including non-melanoma skin cancers and lymphomas. Cancers have also been linked to viral infections in these vulnerable populations.…”

“…Despite oral cancer being a non-AIDS defining malignancy, the AIDS patient however, has a higher likelihood becoming diagnosed with it. 16 The low percentage (78%) might therefore be attributable to some of the respondents taking into consideration the mentioned likelihood due in part to a weakened immune response. 17 Only 7% (26/362) respondents correctly identified all the treatment options (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted Therapy, combination Therapy) for oral cancer.…”
