Non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes: An update

Abstract: The global prevalence of non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rising, along with the epidemic of diabesity. NAFLD is present in >70% of individuals with type 2 diabetes. Although the mutually detrimental relationship between NAFLD and type 2 diabetes has been well established, a multitude of recent studies have further shown that type 2 diabetes is closely linked to the development of cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, liver‐related morbidity and mortality. In contrast, NAFLD also negatively impacts … Show more

“…Obesity is associated with insulin resistance in peripheral glucose, called insulin resistance, and can lead to the development of T2DM and contribute to the development of hepatic steatosis and cardiovascular risk [35][36][37]. Diabetes and obesity are well-known risk factors in the evolution of liver disorders [38][39][40].…”

“…NAFLD is present in >70% of individuals with type 2 diabetes [ 60 ]. Impairment of glucose and lipid metabolism, which has been accelerated by the worldwide increase in the prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes, is most likely behind the increase in patients with NAFLD [ 61 ].…”

“…With the worldwide spread of a sedentary lifestyle and the Western diet, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)—characterized by excessive fat accumulation in hepatocytes caused by factors other than alcohol abuse—is becoming a global health problem with approximately 30% of the world suffering from the disease ( 1 ). As NAFLD progresses, its pathology ranges from non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), fibrosis, and ultimately to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) ( 2 ). The “multiple-hit” hypothesis for the pathogenesis of NAFLD has gradually been replaced by the “two-hit” hypothesis.…”
