Non‐Conjugated Flexible Linkers in Semiconducting Polymers: A Pathway to Improved Processability without Compromising Device Performance

Abstract: Keywords: semiconducting polymer, glass transition temperature, all-polymer solar cell, organic field effect transistor, isoindigo Semiconducting polymers, in contrast to inorganic silicon, are solution processable and can potentially be printed cost efficiently on flexible large-area substrates. However to do so it is of paramount importance to formulate the polymeric semiconductors into inks with specific viscosities. Herein we present the synthesis of a new highly soluble isoindigo monomer and its incorpora… Show more

“…Recently, the modified DMA technique with mass requirement of approximately 5 mg has been successfully employed in measuring the T g of conjugated polymer, in which the material is enclosed into a stainless steel pocket, or drop‐casted on either a polyimide (PI) substrate or a woven glass fiber . It has been suggested that DMA is more sensitive to the T g of conjugated polymers compared to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).…”

“…Similar to the DPP polymers, the backbone T g of isoindigo‐based polymers cannot be readily observed from DSC curve . Recently, Schroeder et al characterized the T g of isoindigo–bithiophene copolymer with 2‐octyldodecyl sidechains with different experimental techniques, including standard DSC, AC‐chip calorimetry, and modified DMA where the material was drop‐casted on Kapton film . A backbone T g of 43 °C was observed from modified DMA.…”

“…[20,29] Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based conjugated polymers are one of the most heavily studied D-A semiconducting materials with a top performing charge mobility above 12 cm 2 V −1 s −1 , [30][31][32] which is comparable to the polycrystalline silicon, allowing many practical applications in electronic devices. [40][41][42] Along this line, Roth et al investigated a library of low bandgap polymers and qualitatively concluded that fused rings on the backbone would increase the elastic modulus and reduce the ductility, while branched side chains will have the opposite effect. [21,30,[32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39] Backbone engineering of the DPP polymer comes from two strategies, either by tuning conjugated donor or acceptor groups or flexible nonconjugated linker groups.…”

“…The observed Tg around -40 o C must then be related to the alkyl side chains of the conjugated polymer, whereas the glass transition associated to the backbone is likely to be too weak to be observed in the DSC experiments due to limited sensitivity. It has been previously noted that long alkyl chains could have their own Tg [56] . The Tg value obtained from the Fox equation is a rough of the chain mobility.…”
