: Two grades of chromium-free alloys were studied in order to apply them as interconnectors for solid oxide fuel cells. The surface modification methods were proposed for each alloy with the purpose of forming of oxide scales considering the required physicochemical properties. Investigations of the structure and properties of the obtained oxide scales were performed and the efficiency of the chosen surface modification methods was approved. The samples with the surface modification exhibited higher conductivity values in comparison with the nonmodified samples. A compatibility study of samples with surface modification and glass sealant of chosen composition was accomplished. The modified samples demonstrated good adhesion during testing and electrical resistance less than 40 mOhm/cm2 at 850 °C in air, which allowed us to recommend these alloys with respective modified oxide scales as interconnectors for SOFC.

A lot of research is going on in the field of glass science to commercialize solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Still, it is a big challenge to develop appropriate glass sealants for a longer duration and sustaining in the operating conditions of this power source. Mixed alkaline earth metal oxides containing silicate or borosilicate glasses could be most suitable as a rigid glass sealant in SOFCs in comparison with borate-and phosphate-based glass sealants. In this review article, the need for the sealants in the planar design of SOFCs, the effect of different modifiers, and intermediate oxides on sealing properties of glasses and glassceramics, particularly, silicate-and borosilicate-based glass sealants have been reviewed. Interaction study of glass sealants with common electrolytes and interconnect materials is also overviewed in this article. In addition to these, future perspectives and suggestions for suitable seal development are also proposed. Novelty statementThis review article is related to the glass sealants for a highly efficient and environment friendly solid oxide fuel cell energy conversion device. Still, it is a big challenge to develop an appropriate sealant to commercialize this energy device. This article provides the researchers with not only progress and latest development in the field of glass sealants but also suggestion and future prospects to develop the sealants.

Reactive air brazing of 3YSZ ceramic to aluminized Crofer22H stainless steel using Ag–CuO fillers

In this work, an effective protected Al2O3 layer was fabricated first on the surface of Crofer22H by reactive air aluminization to suppress cathodic poisoning in solid oxide fuel cells. Then, the reactive air brazing of aluminized Crofer22H to 3YSZ ceramics was carried out by using Ag–CuO fillers. The effects of CuO content and brazing temperature on the interfacial microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints were studied in detail. The results indicated that maintaining a continuous Al2O3 layer was the prerequisite for achieving a reliable joint. And the interfacial reaction gradually became intense with the increase of CuO content, and the continuity of the Al2O3 layer was disrupted as it was increased to 6 mol%. The well‐connected joints could be achieved when brazing at 970–1100°C with Ag–2CuO filler. The interfacial microstructure did not obviously change with increasing temperature, and the joint strength was stable at ∼35 MPa. While the interfacial reaction gradually weakened with increasing temperature as brazing with Ag–4CuO filler, the well‐connected joints were obtained when brazing above 1000°C, and the maximum shear strength of ∼44.3 MPa was obtained when brazing at 1050°C for 30 min.
