Non-Gangrenous Ischaemic Colitis a Review of 17 Cases

Abstract: SUMMARYIschaemic lesions of the colon can be divided into gangrenous and non-gangrenous groups. In this paper 17 patients with non-gangrenous ischaemic colitis are reported; 16 of these occurred spontaneously and I followed an anterior resection of the rectum. The clinical and radiological findings are described. The lesions varied in extent and severity from a short segment of transient mucosal damage to a long permanent stricture. An early barium-enema examination is essential for the initial diagnosis. “…Ischemic colitis is predominantly a disease of the older age group [1,10], It has been previously described in asso ciation with arterial insufficiency [1,[3][4][5], vasculitis [1], ab dominal surgery [10], hemolytic uremic syndrome [11], clostridial infections [2], venous obstruction [7], use of oral contraceptive [7,12], hypotension [6] or thromboembolic phenomena [1], Ischemic bowel disease in patients on hemodialysis has been previously reported [13]. Recently an exacerbation of peripheral vascular disease in elderly patients on chronic ambulatory PD was described [14], In both instances the ischemic disease was at least in part, related to the effects of hypotension on existing vascular disease.…”

“…Cryptitis, papillitis and solitary ulcer syndrome arc specific lesions to the anorectum [1][2][3][4], Proctitis, however, may be a part of mucosal ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease or irradiation colitis [5][6][7], Ischemia of the colon is a well-recognized clinicopathologic entity. It occurs spontaneously in older subjects with arterial disease [8][9][10], In a number of recorded cases ischemic colitis followed operative occlusion of the inferi or mesenteric artery as occurs during resection of abdomi-…”
