Non-Hodgkin'S Lymphoma in Northern Sweden Prognostic Factors and Response to Treatment

Abstract: A total of 352 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma reported to the Cancer Registry of Northern Sweden during 1978-1982 were retrospectively analysed. After morphologic review, 327 cases classifiable as low (n = 162) or high-grade (n = 165) according to the Kiel classification remained for further study. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the interrelations between some variables and their bearing on prognosis in an almost unselected clinical material. Age, morphological grade of malignancy, clinical stage, s… Show more

“…As a result of the salvage treatment no significant difference in 5-year survival between the different treatment groups was observed. The prognostic factors shown in our material agree on the whole with other reports with the exception that no prognostic significance of tumor size was found in our study (8,9,17,(21)(22)(23)(24). One reason for this discrepancy may be the fact that most patients in our material with large tumor volume were given more intense treatment, which may have improved the treatment results in this group.…”

“…Our knowledge concerning adverse prognostic pretreatment factors is improving which should be considered when the treatment of the patient is decided (9,17,(21)(22)(23)(24). We now report the results of a retrospective study comprising all consecutive patients with high-grade stage I non-Hodgkin's lymphoma treated at three departments of oncology in Sweden during the period [1985][1986][1987][1988][1989][1990].…”

“…An inverse correlation was detected between IPI scores, and response rates. In the literature, higher IPI score, advanced stage, aggressive lymphoma subgroup according to WHO classification were observed to be poor prognostic parameters [31,35].…”

“…In patients with malignant lymphomas among biochemical parameters lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) represents a very valuable enzyme, and its serum level has been considered as very important in the evaluation of disease extension in non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) (1) and Hodgkin's disease (HD) (2). Considering that elevation of serum LDH level correlates with bulky tumor mass (3,4), it represents an important independent prognostic factor for patients with lymphomas (5,6). Furthermore, evaluation of lactate dehydrogenase, owing to its very well de®ned structural and kinetic characteristics, gives valuable data concerning cellular metabolic status.…”
