Non‐Hodgkin's lymphomas in Thailand: A retrospective pathologic and clinical analysis of 1391 cases

Abstract: The histopathologic pattern of NHL in Thailand was characterized by the features noted for Asia, i.e., a low rate of the follicular entity and a preponderance of the diffuse aggressive subtypes. In addition, the frequency of the small lymphocytic and diffuse small cleaved subtypes were increased compared with the Western population and the rate of T-cell lymphoma appeared to be less than in Far East Asia.

“…Although the rate of occurrence of follicular lymphoma has been found to be lower in Asia (6–8%), 6,13–15 a relatively high rate (19%) similar to that of Western countries (11–30%) 13 was found in the present study and a similar result has been reported previously 16 . We suggest the following reasons for the relatively high rate of occurrence of follicular lymphomas.…”

“…[8,21,[30][31][32] Figures of 3.8% and 3% were also reported from the Asian countries of Thailand and Pakistan, respectively. [8,33] Such geographical variation in FL has long been recognized, and it has been suggested that there are different molecular pathways in ML development in different geographical areas. [34] The latter was inferred by the significantly lower incidence of bcl2 gene rearrangements, the hallmark of FL, in Asian compared to Western countries.…”

“…7 Lower rates of follicular lymphoma have also been reported in other Asian countries: Korea (5.88%), 8 Hong Kong (8%), 7,16 and Thailand (3.8–11.1%). 9,31 Notably, the incidence of follicular lymphoma in mainland Europe (11%–18%) is substantially less than that in North America, London and Capetown, although the reasons for these differences are unknown. 7…”

“…A recent retrospective study of the REAL classification addressed issues of the relative frequency of the subtypes of malignant lymphoma. 5–12 Special attention was focused on geographic differences, 5–34 which may be attributable to the differences in etiologic or host factors, and it gave new insight into the further understanding of lymphocytic disorders. The objective of the present study was to examine the distribution of the subtypes of malignant lymphomas in 3194 Japanese patients diagnosed according to the WHO classification.…”
