NON‐IgE‐MEDIATED ASTHMA IN CHILDREN

Abstract: Among 586 children with asthma, 484 (82%) were found to have IgE-mediated ("extrinsic") asthma, and seventy-two (12%) non-IgE ("intrinsic") asthma. The remaining 30 patients (6%) were classified as "intermediate", as they had serum IgE within or above serum IgE levels of healthy children but no allergy to common allergens. During a three-year study period, the seventy-two patients with intrinsic asthma as opposed to 84 patients with extrinsic asthma had significantly more hyperinflation of the lungs, more epis… Show more

“…It is thus questionable, whether a distinction of "extrinsic" and "intrinsic" asthma should be based on the presence or absence of an elevated serum concentration of IgE [34]. Further studies are clearly warranted to elucidate whether these observations represent a causal, pathogenic, or noncausal association.…”

“…These disorders are well-known Th1-mediated inflammatory diseases. In addition, BAFF induces class-switch DNA recombination to produce IgG, IgA and IgE (Litinskiy et al, 2002), which is in relation to Th2-mediated immune reaction-mediated allergic disorder such as asthma (Rackeman, 1947;Ostergaard, 1985;Corrigan, 2004). Our previous reports show that BAFF protein level was higher in asthma patient, suggesting that BAFF could be a novel diagnostic parameter and a novel therapeutic target to treat asthma (Kang et al, 2006).…”

“…Regarding the mechanism of disease onset, asthma is classified into two types, atopic and nonatopic, based on the presence or absence of an IgE-mediated allergic reaction (1). Interestingly however, several recent reports show that asthma is almost always associated with some type of IgE-mediated allergic reaction (2,3).…”
