Non-invasive investigation of inflammatory bowel disease

Abstract: The assessment of inflammatory activity in intestinal disease in man can be done using a variety of different techniques. These range from the use of non-invasive acute phase inflammatory markers measured in plasma such as C reactive protein (CRP) and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR)

“…Genetic and environmental factors were assumed to play a significant role in the etiology of the disease [1,2] . The role of genetic factors was supported by ethnical and familial differences and also by twin studies [19][20][21][22] , while the differences in incidence rates among various geographical areas suggest a role for certain environmental factors.…”

“…Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a multifactorial polygenic disease with probable genetic heterogeneity. Based on this hypothesis, the disease may develop in a genetically predisposed host as a consequence of disregulated immune response to environmental factors, in particular enteric antigens, resulting in continuous immune-mediated inflammation [1,2] . However, the disease phenotype may be affected by various other factors.…”

“…Increased calprotectin levels have been detected in intestinal diseases associated with inflammation such as necrotizing enterocolitis, and its quantitation provides a measure of the degree of tissue inflammation in adults with irritable bowel disease (31,32). Neopterin and calprotectin appears to play a regulatory role in the inflammatory process as well as calprotectin (33,34).…”

“…The diagnosis of IBD presents some difficulties in clinical practice due to overlapping of symptoms with non-inflammatory functional bowel disorders (3). Since recognition of IBD requires extensive, invasive and expensive investigation, low-cost and noninvasive biochemical markers facilitating differential diagnosis are needed (4).…”
