Non-Invasive Measurement of Skin Microvascular Response during Pharmacological and Physiological Provocations

Abstract: IntroductionMicrovascular changes in the skin due to pharmacological and physiological provocations can be used as a marker for vascular function. While laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) has been used extensively for measurement of skin microvascular responses, Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) and Tissue Viability Imaging (TiVi) are novel imaging techniques. TiVi measures red blood cell concentration, while LDF and LSCI measure perfusion. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare responses to provocatio… Show more

“…Skin perfusion is estimated based on the reduction of the local speckle contrast in the reflected image. The technique has previously been described in detail . Perfusion images were acquired by averaging data from 42 images taken in rapid succession (acquisition time 2 seconds) and then further analyzed by calculating mean perfusion levels in regions of interest (ROI) using PIMsoft 1.3 (Perimed AB, Järfälla, Sweden).…”

“…Laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) and laser Doppler perfusion imaging (LDPI) are commonly used, non‐invasive methods to measure skin microcirculation . Another established technology for assessing skin microcirculation is Tissue Viability (TiVi) . Laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI) is a relatively new promising non‐contact technology for assessing microcirculation of the skin .…”

“…Such a control would allow improvement of repeatability and fidelity of the measured data. Moreover, further research, which for example may include the study of BPA response on the reactive hyperemia with a local heating after occlusion of the brachial artery [32,33], is needed to determine the range of the BPA dynamics in terms of biological zero and maximal blood flow. Study of the dynamics of the PPG waveform in these conditions is an important step for development of reliable indicators of the cutaneous blood flow and its variability in changeable physiological and pathological conditions.…”
