Non‐isothermal crystallization kinetics of cork‐polymer composites for injection molding

Abstract: The non-isothermal crystallization behavior of cork-polymer composites (CPC) based on polypropylene (PP) matrix was studied. Using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the crystallization behavior of CPC with 15 wt % cork powder at different cooling rates (5, 10, 15, and 20 8C/min) was studied. The effect of a coupling agent based on maleic anhydride was also analyzed. A composite (PPg) containing polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride (PPgMA) and PP was prepared for comparison purposes. Crystallization ki… Show more

“…They further explained that during the cooling stage of DSC, there was a lack of visible changes in the crystalline structure of PP J o u r n a l P r e -p r o o f composites with or without natural fillers. The results obtained and observation from this study were in agreement with other previous studies (Magalhães da Silva, Lima, & Oliveira, 2016;Fernandes, Correlo, Mano, & Reis, 2014). As observed in the above studies, having natural reinforcements in the polymeric matrix can alter the DSC characteristics of the composites.…”

“…In non-isothermal crystallization, the temperature can be replaced by time according to equation [33]:t=false(ToTfalse)/Φ where To is the onset crystallization temperature, T is the crystallization temperature at time t, and Φ is the cooling rate.…”

“…of plastic products, fillers are added in the polymeric matrix. For instance, colorants, plasticizers, lubricants, antioxidants are commonly used in plastic packaging [4][5][6], and flame retardants are commonly used in plastic for electronics [7,8]. With the introduction of fillers during the process, the plastic part fulfills the requirements for the use in specific applications, but, at the same time, it reduces the sustainability of the plastic products [9].…”
