Non-Parametric Production Analysis of Pesticides Use in the Netherlands

Abstract: Many previous empirical studies on the productivity of pesticides suggest that pesticides are under-utilized in agriculture despite the general held believe that these inputs are substantially over-utilized. This paper uses data envelopment analysis (DEA) to calculate non-parametric measures of the value of the marginal product of pesticides. Furthermore, the effect of pesticides on the value of the marginal product of productive inputs is investigated in order to analyze technical interdependence between pest… Show more

“…Yet, critics question restrictions imposed on the effects of pesticide inputs. Oude Lansink and Carpentier (2001) challenge the partition of inputs into those that reduce damage and those that increase productivity (see also Carpentier and Weaver 1997;Oude Lansink and Silva 2004). They present evidence of interactions between the two categories.…”

“…They present evidence of interactions between the two categories. Oude Lansink and Silva (2004) also critique implicit assumptions imposed on parameters in the damage control model as well as the assumption of a nondecreasing damage control function. While the critiques are not without merit, and whereas the damage control model may not be applicable in every case, its general validity and applicability make it a considerable innovation.…”

“…nitrogen surplus) in Dutch dairy farming reporting low levels of environmental efficiency. Oude Lansink and Silva () utilized a non‐parametric approach to measure pesticide productivity in Dutch arable farming and compute shadow prices of different pesticides. The authors showed that almost all pesticides were on average underused by Dutch cash crop producers.…”

“…Consequently, they can be used to create a shadow price for each environmental pressure, together with the value of their marginal product. Following Oude- Lansink & Silva (2004), the marginal product of environmental pressure p n in farm k o is determined as the change in value added stemming from a marginal change in the environmental pressure. In formal terms:…”
