Non-polarized cytokine profile of a long-term non-progressor HIV infected patient

Abstract: The HIV-1 initial viral infection may present diverse clinical and laboratory course and lead to rapid, intermediate, or long-term progression. Among the group of non-progressors, the elite controllers are those who control the infection most effectively, in the absence of antiretroviral therapy (ART). In this paper, the TH1, TH2 and TH17 cytokines profiles are described, as well as clinical and laboratory aspects of an HIV-infected patient with undetectable viral load without antiretroviral therapy. “…On the other hand, after describing the TH1, TH2, and TH17 cell profiles, researchers ( 97 ) found that the production of IL-6, IL-10 (TH2), TNF-α and IFN-γ (TH1) was observed in ECs, and these patients presented a non-polarised cytokine production profile. IL-2 and IL-4 were not detected, possibly due to a 13-year- duration of infection, as these cytokines are part of a characteristic pattern of early infection.…”

“…We also investigated the inflammation and coagulation profile of PWH and found statistically significant differences in biomarker concentrations compared with those who were not infected with HIV ( Supplementary Table 3 ). We hypothesize that the HIV triggered immune responses, which resulted in a strong T helper (Th)1/Th2 disturbance that would lead to a distinctive biomarker signature and may have different pathways that promote immune activation [ 18–20 ].…”

“…These asymptomatic individuals are long-term non-progressors who maintain a stable CD4 count [50]. Evidences suggest that LTNPs have better immune functions than those of progressors [51][52][53][54]. A transcriptome analysis by Wu et al highlighted that HIV-infected progressors had an overall down-regulation of the TLR signalling pathway, along with lower MAPK and NF-κB activation [55].…”
