Non-Random Genome Editing and Natural Cellular Engineering in Cognition-Based Evolution

Abstract: Neo-Darwinism presumes that biological variation is a product of random genetic replication errors and natural selection. Cognition-Based Evolution (CBE) asserts a comprehensive alternative approach to phenotypic variation and the generation of biological novelty. In CBE, evolutionary variation is the product of natural cellular engineering that permits purposive genetic adjustments as cellular problem-solving. CBE upholds that the cornerstone of biology is the intelligent measuring cell. Since all biological … Show more

“…A new, more general view of cognition that recognizes not only humans as cognitive agents but includes all living beings, casts a completely new light on the process of evolution. Evolution has been described as a cognition-based process driven by non-random genome editing and natural cellular engineering [ 44 ]. Torday and Miller elaborated on the view of cognition-based evolution in the context of epigenetic evolutionary biology [ 45 ].…”

“…”Cognition-Based Evolution argues that all of the biological and evolutionary development represents the perpetual auto-poietic defense of self-referential basal cellular states of homeostatic preference. The means by which these states are attained and maintained is through self-referential measurement of information and its communication” [ 44 ].…”

“…These depictions contrast sharply with the extent to which they are often regulated (Capy et al 2000) and targeted (Sultana et al 2017) and with the benefits they can confer to host organisms. Such observations are forcing the use of increasingly design-based language . Miller Enguita & Leitão (2021) in a recent review article about TEs and other NGE processes commented:…”

“…Consequently, mutation can no longer be considered a directionless force in evolution. Instead, variations arise from epigenetic impacts that drive differential patterns of Natural Cellular Engineering through largely nonrandom genome editing, producing altered phenotypes [ 39 ]. Accordingly, the operative propulsive drive in evolution is collective cellular action to assimilate environmental challenges.…”

“…Further, the assumption that viral quasi-species generation results from random genetic variations is called into question. Instead, most virocellular interactions are transfers of nonrandom recombinant genetic modules that confer bioactive cellular expression as part of a universal biological process of Natural Cellular Engineering [ 39 ]. Reciprocally, cellular genetic material represents its own source of modular substitutions for recipient viruses as part of continuous virocellular exchanges.…”
