Non‐surgical blepharoplasty with the novel plasma radiofrequency ablation technology

Abstract: Blepharoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgical procedures performed worldwide. It is carried out for treating both aesthetic indications, improving the appearance of the upper and lower eyelids, enhancing the expression of the eyes and rejuvenating the areas surrounding the eyes, and functional indications. The main functional indications include significant dermatochalasis (loose and redundant eyelid skin) when impedes the peripheral vision, upper eyelid entropion (the turning inward of the border … Show more

“…Moreover, Sotiris observed improvement of eyelid skin appearance by 30% for each plasma treatment session 13 . High satisfaction rates with 2 session treatment were also demonstrated by Baroni using a visual analog scale to evaluate the effectiveness of plasma ablation 24 . We could explain that pleasant results obtained in previous studies diverge from this study due to the protocol used.…”

“…Plasma is “the fourth state of the matter” derived from the ionization of neutral gases present in the air [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. DAS medical device utilizes plasma energy created from the ionization of atmospheric gas between the device and the skin and consists of a hand piece with a sterile tip and a wrist-generator, allowing the adjustment of power and frequency values.…”

“…Plasma radiofrequency ablation (P-RF) technique, recently used for the treatment of xanthelasma palpebrarum [ 6 ], full facial rejuvenation and photoaging [ 7 ], facial acne and fine lines [ 8 ], non-surgical blepharoplasty [ 9 ], and benign skin lesions removal [ 10 ], can be considered a good option to meet the need for less invasive and safe technology for the treatment of scars.…”

“…Plasma is also defined as “the fourth state of the matter” derived from the ionization of neutral gases present in the air 4 . The energy produced by a radiofrequency generator causes electrons to escape from their atoms, inducing a positive charge and ionization and, consequently, increasing in the number of electrons with the development of positive particles called ions and the dissociation of molecular bonds 5 . The resulting plasma spark sublimates the superficial layers of the skin, causing instantaneous heating in a controlled and uniform mode 1,4–6 .…”

“…1,[4][5][6] The device consists of a hand piece with a sterile tip and a wrist generator that allows the adjustment of power and frequency; the tool is different from traditional radiofrequency as it works without touch. 5 Selected energy can be concentrated in very small cutaneous areas (1 mm Ø), acting on the tissues with care and precision, with a layer-by-layer mode that avoids damaging the deeper layers of the skin; all these are fundamental requirements when treatments are performed on delicate skin areas. 5 Its applications are many, ranging from the removal of unsightly skin lesions, such as fibromas and dermal nevi (Figure 1A Once the dermatologist has diagnosed the unsightly facial skin disorder and ascertained that PRF ablation could be an appropriate approach, contraindications to treatment must be researched…”
